Quick answer: 20 Minute Marketing is the best choice for most people learning digital marketing for a job, a career change or client work: self paced online, paid once, Essentials $499 (over 50 lessons, about 18 hours) to Expert $999, 12 months access and a 30 day money-back guarantee. Choose a polytechnic or NZQA-approved diploma if you need a recognised qualification or a StudyLink loan.
20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and ranks its own course first. Here is why, and where other options fit better.

What a polytechnic or NZQA-approved diploma does better
- A recognised qualification. Every diploma in the table above is on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. We do not offer one and will not pretend to. If a job ad asks for a diploma, this settles it.
- It can cost less than us. SIT charges no tuition for its Level 5 marketing diploma under its Zero Fees Scheme, only $665 a year in material costs, which is less than our Expert course [2]. Open Polytechnic's Level 5 diploma costs about $2,912 for a full recognised qualification [1]. If you want a qualification, those are strong value, and price alone is not a reason to choose us.
- StudyLink loans. Open Polytechnic and Digital Marketing School NZ say their diplomas are eligible for StudyLink support [1] [4]. Our courses are not.
- Teachers and a timetable. Ara runs its diploma full time on campus, SIT offers onsite study and Digital Marketing School NZ runs live classes [3] [2] [4]. If you work better with a fixed schedule, that structure is valuable.
Where 20 Minute Marketing is different
What the qualification guarantees. NZQA reviewed the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5), qualification 2459, in August 2025 and published a new version, 2459-4. Its next review is due in September 2030 [5] [6]. The marketing strand's graduate outcomes say graduates will "use existing technology, and examine emerging tools and platforms relevant for different marketing contexts", but they do not name a single digital channel [5].
To be fair, NZQA sets the outcomes and each provider writes its own programme. Ara's version includes a 15 credit Introduction to Digital Marketing course [3], so graduates can still learn digital marketing. This is about what the qualification guarantees, not what any teacher covers.
Practical, channel by channel lessons. Our courses teach SEO, Google Ads, social media, email and SMS, websites and AI tools as hands on skills, and each course ends with a practice brief that produces something you can show an employer or a client.
No intake dates. You can start today, study in 20 minute lessons around work or school, and pay once.
Kept current. 20 Minute Marketing writes every lesson and updates lessons when the platforms change.
Which should you choose?
- Choose 20 Minute Marketing if you want current platform skills and a portfolio, need to fit study around a job, and want a low one off price.
- Choose a polytechnic or NZQA-approved diploma if you need a recognised qualification, want a StudyLink loan, can use SIT's Zero Fees Scheme, or want a teacher and a timetable.
- Do both if you want the qualification and the hands on platform practice. Nothing stops you studying a diploma and one of our short courses at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Is a digital marketing course or a polytechnic diploma better?
For most people who want practical, current digital marketing skills, 20 Minute Marketing is the better choice: self paced online, paid once from $499 (Essentials) to $999 (Expert), short courses from $79, 12 months access, a 30 day money-back guarantee and a Certificate of Completion (not accredited). A polytechnic or NZQA-approved diploma is better if you need a recognised qualification or a StudyLink loan, and SIT charges no tuition for its Level 5 marketing diploma under its Zero Fees Scheme. Start with Essentials or find the right course for you.
Is this course accredited?
No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not a registered private training establishment, and our courses are not approved or accredited by NZQA.
Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially young people starting out. It is also slow. The New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5), which includes the marketing strand, was last reviewed in August 2025, isn't due for review again until September 2030, and its marketing outcomes don't name a single digital channel, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change.
If you need a qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, a polytechnic or another NZQA-approved provider is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.
Is a polytechnic diploma cheaper than 20 Minute Marketing?
It can be. SIT charges no tuition for its New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5) (Marketing and Sales Strand) under its Zero Fees Scheme, with direct material costs of $665 a year full time. Open Polytechnic's online Level 5 diploma costs about $2,912 for the whole programme. Ara's version costs $6,690 to $7,130 a year, and Digital Marketing School NZ's Level 6 diploma costs $9,824 plus $600. Our courses cost $79 to $999, paid once.
Can I get a student loan for 20 Minute Marketing?
No. StudyLink says you must be studying an approved course run by an approved education provider. 20 Minute Marketing is neither, so our courses are not eligible for a Student Loan. You do not need a loan for a $499 one-off payment, and there is a 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase.
Is Fees Free still available for a diploma?
Inland Revenue says the Government is ending Fees Free for the final year of tertiary study, and if you complete your qualification after 31 December 2026 you will no longer be eligible. SIT's Zero Fees Scheme is SIT's own scheme, so check its terms on SIT's page.
Can I study a diploma and 20 Minute Marketing together?
Yes. Some learners do a qualification for the credential and one of our short courses for extra practice on a specific platform, such as Google Ads or SEO.
