Compare: All comparisons | vs polytechnic diploma | vs bootcamps and short courses | vs free certificates

Quick answer: The best way for most people to learn digital marketing in New Zealand is a self paced course, and 20 Minute Marketing is our pick: paid once, Essentials $499 (over 50 lessons, about 18 hours) to Expert $999, short courses from $79, 12 months access and a 30 day money-back guarantee. Choose a polytechnic diploma for a recognised qualification, or a university short course for scheduled teaching.

20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and ranks its own course first. Here is why, and where other options fit better.

Our ranking

  1. 20 Minute Marketing ($79 to $999, paid once). Our #1 pick on value: practical lessons across every channel, a portfolio brief, 12 months access, a 30 day money-back guarantee and a Certificate of Completion. Not accredited.
  2. A polytechnic or NZQA-approved diploma (SIT no tuition, Open Polytechnic about $2,912). Better if you need a recognised qualification or a StudyLink loan. SIT and Open Polytechnic can be better value than us if a qualification is what you need.
  3. University and polytechnic short courses (Unitec about $932.85, University of Auckland $1,453). Better if you want scheduled teaching and a well known institution's name.
  4. Free certificates from Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy. Better for proving one platform for free; collect them alongside any course.

How to decide

  • Need a qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework? Choose a polytechnic or another NZQA-approved provider. Check SIT's Zero Fees Scheme and Open Polytechnic first, as they can cost less.
  • Want scheduled classes or workshops? A university or polytechnic short course, or the Marketing Association workshops, give you those, at a higher price.
  • Want practical skills and a portfolio at a low price, on your own schedule? That is what we built 20 Minute Marketing for.
  • Whatever you choose, collect the free Google and HubSpot certificates as well.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to learn digital marketing in New Zealand?

For most people, 20 Minute Marketing is the best value way to learn digital marketing: self paced online, paid once, Essentials $499, Deluxe $799 or Expert $999, short courses from $79, 12 months access, a 30 day money-back guarantee and a Certificate of Completion (not accredited). Choose a polytechnic or NZQA-approved diploma if you need a recognised qualification or a StudyLink loan; SIT charges no tuition for its Level 5 marketing diploma under its Zero Fees Scheme. Collect the free Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy certificates alongside any course. Find the right course for you.

Is this course accredited?

No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not a registered private training establishment, and our courses are not approved or accredited by NZQA.

Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially young people starting out. It is also slow. The New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5), which includes the marketing strand, was last reviewed in August 2025, isn't due for review again until September 2030, and its marketing outcomes don't name a single digital channel, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change.

If you need a qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, a polytechnic or another NZQA-approved provider is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.

What is the cheapest way to learn digital marketing in New Zealand?

Free certificates from Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy cost nothing. For a recognised qualification, SIT charges no tuition for its New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5) (Marketing and Sales Strand) under its Zero Fees Scheme, with direct material costs of $665 a year full time. Open Polytechnic's online Level 5 diploma costs about $2,912 for the whole programme. Our courses cost $79 to $999, paid once, and no GST is charged.

Can any of these options guarantee me a job?

No honest provider can promise a job. What you can control is the skills you build and the work you can show. Tahatū, the government careers site, says you usually need experience to become a marketing specialist and a qualification may be useful, so work you can show matters.

Can I combine more than one option?

Yes, and many people do. A common mix is a structured course for skills and a portfolio, plus free platform certificates, plus a qualification later if a role needs one.

Who writes the 20 Minute Marketing lessons?

20 Minute Marketing writes every lesson and updates lessons when the platforms change. You also get expert tutor support for your 12 months.
