Best SEO Courses in New Zealand 2026: An Honest Comparison

20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and ranks its own course first for small business owners. Here is why, and where other options fit better.

Search "SEO course NZ" and you get a mix of polytechnic short courses, industry body workshops, American universities and free vendor academies. They are not competing for the same person, which makes it hard to work out which one is for you.

We teach an SEO course ourselves, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be straight about where other options beat ours. Every price below was checked on the provider's own page on 23 October 2026, and the sources are listed under the table. Providers change their prices, so confirm before you buy.

First, work out which of the three you are

• The career builder. You want SEO on your CV or you are moving into a marketing role. You want a recognised name and a certificate.
• The curious learner. You want to understand how search works and you would rather not pay. Free is fine for you.
• The business owner or freelancer. Your business, or your client's, is not showing up on Google and you want to fix it yourself. You need the specific steps in the right order, not a certificate.

1. 20 Minute Marketing SEO course (NZ$149, paid once). Our #1 pick for small business owners and freelancers: practical, current lessons on local SEO, Google Business Profile and AI search, at the lowest price of any paid option here.
2. Marketing Association NZ (from NZ$595 + GST). Better if you want live online teaching from a working SEO practitioner and a name the industry knows.
3. Unitec (about NZ$933). Better if you are in Auckland and want hands-on classroom workshops.
4. Coursera (UC Davis). Better for depth and a university name, if you have about 62 hours.
5. Free: Ahrefs, Semrush Academy, Brian Dean's Content-Led SEO and Yoast. Better if your budget is zero. Start here either way.

The New Zealand providers

Marketing Association NZ, from NZ$595 + GST

The Marketing Association's SEO + CRO: Need to Know course runs live online over four weekly 90 minute sessions, about six hours in total, with the SEO part taught by an agency practitioner. Members pay NZ$595 + GST and non-members NZ$895 + GST, and it counts towards Marketing Association accreditation.

Choose it if you want to ask questions live and you work in a marketing team. Skip it if you need to start today: there were no dates listed when we checked.

Unitec, about NZ$933

Unitec's Search Engine Optimisation short course is taught as hands-on workshops in Auckland, for about NZ$932.85 including GST and the student services fee. It is open to domestic students only, and enrolments were open for 2027 when we checked.

Choose it if you are in Auckland and learn best in a classroom. Skip it if you live elsewhere or need to start this year.

The global platforms

Coursera, UC Davis SEO Specialization

Five courses, about 62 hours and a capstone project, with a 4.6 star average from 13,112 reviews and 278,424 enrolments on the course page on 23 October 2026. On depth, nothing else here is close.

Choose it if you want to understand SEO properly and you have the hours. Skip it if you want local examples: it is a United States university course.

The best free SEO courses

Ahrefs SEO Course for Beginners, free

Fourteen short video lessons, about two hours in total, no sign-up. It covers keyword research, on-page SEO, link building and technical basics. There is no certificate, and the examples use Ahrefs' own paid tools.

Semrush Academy and Content-Led SEO with Brian Dean, free

Semrush Academy offers short modules on SEO essentials, keyword research, on-page SEO and AI search, and local SEO, each with a certificate. Its Content-Led SEO course with Brian Dean runs to 28 lessons and about five and a half hours.

Yoast SEO academy, free

Yoast has five free courses, including SEO for beginners, and includes all 17 of its courses with Yoast SEO Premium at US$118.80 a year. It is the natural pick if your site runs on WordPress.

The catch with all free courses: they teach everything and each leans towards its own product, but none will tell you which of the fifty things you just learned matter for a small business in Tauranga. Free courses are good at teaching everything. They are poor at telling you what to ignore.

Where ours fits, and where it does not

Our SEO course is NZ$149 once, 32 lessons of about twenty minutes, with tutor support. It is built for small business owners and freelancers who want their own business, or their clients, found on Google: local SEO, Google Business Profile, keyword research, technical basics, measurement, and AI and answer engine optimisation.

Do not buy ours if you want a qualification for your CV. 20 Minute Marketing is not an NZQA-approved provider, and the course ends in a Certificate of Completion. Do not buy ours if your budget is zero either: start with the free Ahrefs and Semrush courses.
