Google Ads Not Converting? A 20-Minute Diagnostic

Getting clicks but no enquiries? Check these · Updated July 2026

The short answer

If your Google Ads get clicks but no conversions, check five things in order: keyword intent, landing page match, mobile speed, form friction, and conversion tracking. Most cases of ads not working are actually a broken landing page or untracked conversions, not the ads themselves.

Clicks are coming in, budget is going out, but the phone is not ringing. Before you blame Google Ads and quit, run this quick diagnostic. Nine times out of ten the problem is fixable and it is not the ads.

Work through these five, in order

  • 1. Are you tracking conversions at all? Start here. If conversion tracking is not set up, you may be getting enquiries and not seeing them, or you cannot tell which clicks work. Set it up via Google Ads conversion tracking before anything else.
  • 2. Do your keywords match buying intent? If you are paying for broad or informational searches ("how to fix a tap") rather than buying ones ("plumber near me"), you get clicks from people not ready to hire. Tighten your keywords.
  • 3. Does the landing page match the ad? If your ad promises "emergency plumbing" but sends people to your generic homepage, they bounce. The page must deliver exactly what the ad promised.
  • 4. Is the page fast on mobile? Most ad clicks are on phones. A slow page loses people before it loads. Test with PageSpeed Insights.
  • 5. Is your form or contact step easy? A long form, a buried phone number, or a clunky booking step kills conversions. Make the next step obvious and effortless.
The most common culprit: the landing page, not the ads. Great ads sending traffic to a weak or mismatched page is the number one reason campaigns "do not work". Fix the page and the same ads suddenly convert.

The pattern behind most failures

Google Ads is a chain: the right person searches, sees a relevant ad, clicks, lands on a matching page, and takes an easy next step. If any link breaks, the whole thing fails, and it usually is not the first link. The ads did their job by getting the click. The break is almost always after the click: a mismatched page, a slow load, or a hard-to-use form.

Give it time, then judge

One more thing: a new campaign spends its first weeks learning. Judging conversions after a handful of clicks is like judging a fishing spot after two casts. Make sure you have given it enough volume, 15 to 20 clicks a day for a few weeks, before concluding it does not convert. Then work the checklist above.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Google Ads getting clicks but no conversions?

Usually because of something after the click: a landing page that does not match the ad, a slow mobile page, or a hard-to-use contact form. Untracked conversions are also common, meaning enquiries happen but you cannot see them.

How do I fix Google Ads that are not converting?

Check five things in order: conversion tracking, keyword intent, landing page match, mobile speed, and form friction. Most problems are a mismatched or slow landing page rather than the ads themselves.

What is the most common reason Google Ads fail?

A weak or mismatched landing page. Great ads that send traffic to a generic or slow page is the number one reason campaigns do not convert. Fixing the page often makes the same ads work.

How long before Google Ads should convert?

Give a new campaign a few weeks and enough volume, around 15 to 20 clicks a day, before judging it. Campaigns spend their first weeks learning, so early results are not a fair test.
